21 Days of Prayer: August 2019

Day 1: August 4

A Prayer of Praise

Prayer:  God, we want to strive to be a church that you want to bless! Help us to humble ourselves that we compel you to empower us like never before for ministry. And help us to communicate such joy, such truth, such grace, and such passion in our worship that we compel others to join the experience of praising you.

Scripture:  1 Chronicles 16:23-31

Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.  For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.  For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.  Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place.  Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.  Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him.  Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.  Tremble before him, all the earth!  The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”

Day 2: August 5

A Prayer for Discipleship

Prayer:  God, help us to identify people into whom we can pour our time, our lives, and our knowledge. Help us to dive deeper into our personal relationships with you than ever before and to be formed, by your Spirit and your Word, into the likeness of Jesus Christ. And help us sustain a multiplying movement of disciple-makers!
Scripture:  2 Timothy 2:2
You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.

Next Step:  A disciple is a learner. Spend time in God’s word this week and share what you learned with a good friend.


Day 3: August 6

A Prayer of Serving Others

Prayer:  God, thank you for giving, entirely by grace, gifts for each of us to use in ministering to each other. Point us toward having the hearts of servants. Open our eyes to the needs of other people around us and give us wisdom as we equip others for the work of ministry.
Scripture:  Romans 12:10-11
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the LORD

Next Step:  Are you serving in a ministry? Join a serving team this week. If you are on a team already, serve a random stranger with an act of kindness today.


Day 4: August 7

A Prayer of Proclaiming the Gospel

Prayer:  God, remove the blinders from the eyes of unbelievers so that the gospel we are sharing will connect with their minds, hearts, and wills. Empower us, as you’ve promised to do, to be faithful in sharing our own faith stories and the life-changing story of Jesus’ death for the sins of the world. Help us to faithfully proclaim the life-changing power of the message of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ!
Scripture:  1 John 1:3-4
What we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.

Next Step:  When is the last time you shared with someone how much Jesus has changed your life?  Today is the day. May we never be timid in sharing the hope that is in us.


Day 5: August 8

A Prayer for our Families

Prayer:  God, for broken marriages, we plead for healing! For relationships between parents and children that are strained, we pray for unity! We pray that the enemy would be rebuked in his attempt to undermine the stability of families in our church and all around us. 
Scripture:  Ephesians 1:16-23
I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Next Step:  Please be praying over our children, our parents, our young professionals and all generations represented in First City. Pray for protection, safety and peace for every man, woman and child.


Day 6: August 9

A Prayer to Follow Jesus

Prayer:  Lord, we want to follow in the path of Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life. His words are truth, his yoke is easy and his burden is light. In Him is everlasting life. Teach us how to keep our eyes on Him so that we do not depart from His presence.
Scripture:  Luke 9:23-24
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”

Next Step:  Where is Jesus leading you? Ask Jesus to direct your path today. Intentionally go out for the only purpose of doing something in Jesus’ name.


Day 7: August 10

A Prayer for Generous Hearts

Prayer:  God, we trust you to provide for your work entirely, but we know that you often choose to provide for your work by raising up givers. God, bring financial peace and healing to people trapped under the burden of debt and release people to give and invest joyfully into the growth of your Kingdom. Help us to give in a way that reflects your own giving nature to others!

Scripture:  2 Corinthians 9:12-15

For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Next Step:  We give generously in three different ways: with our time, with our talents, and with our tithes and offerings. This week choose a couple of ways you can be generous and watch how God blesses your heart.


Day 8: August 11

A Prayer for God’s Kingdom to Reign in Pensacola

Prayer:  God, our desire is for your kingdom to reign all throughout Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Molino, Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Milton, Pace, Cantonment and Beulah. Where you reign there is peace. Where you are not present there is unrest. We pray for you to take back this territory that Satan has ravaged and rescue those who have been wounded.
Scripture:  Luke 11:2
And Jesus said to them, When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.”

Next Step:  As you ride around our cities, pray for the reign of God to grow and overcome all evil.


Day 9: August 12

A Prayer Against Strongholds

Prayer:  God, break any stronghold of fear or doubt, shame or unbelief that weakens my walk and witness and that makes me so vulnerable to the wiles of Satan. Help me, I pray, to resist the devil and to take every thought captive. When the enemy works to drag me down I pray you raise me up. For You, O Lord, have not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, self-discipline and a sound mind. 
Scripture:  Ephesians 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Next Step:  A stronghold can be anything that would move you away from God. The enemy uses all types of addictions to weaken our relationship with God. Pray against all addictions and pray for all our organizations and counselors that exist to help people conquer any stronghold keeping them from being free.


Day 10: August 13

A Prayer for LIFT (Our Foster Care Initiative)

Prayer:  Lord, children are special to you and always have been.  Yet, they are so vulnerable to abuse and lack of good care and love. Bless our LIFT ministry as we seek to support all those rescuing these hurting and abandoned children. Move in us mightily as we seek to radically impact our foster care crisis in our county.
Scripture:  Psalm 82:3-4
Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.  Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Next Step:  Email lift@firstcitychurch.org and see how you can get involved. There are many different ways to help the ministry, support those fostering children and donate useful items.  Pray for God’s provision.


Day 11: August 14

A Prayer for Healthy Communities

Prayer:  God, we want to live in healthy communities with healthy families. We pray against poverty, broken homes and hurting people. We pray against crime and the spread of evil. We pray for good jobs and provision. We pray for safe communities, lots of laughter and the joy of the Lord to abound. 

Scripture:  Leviticus 19:16-18
You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord. You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Next Step:  Walk or drive through your neighborhood and pray for every home and family. Also pray that our neighborhoods will be safe. Invite some neighbors over for desert and get to know them. Pray that God will open a door for you to share your faith.


Day 12: August 15

A Prayer for Renewal

Prayer:  God, renew our hearts and mold them into the image of Jesus. We need more of you. We need to become alive in Jesus name. Fill us with your Holy Spirit and make us holy, completely yours. Make us new in every way. You are our joy, our hope and our very breath. Your mercies are new every morning so continually refresh us with your Spirit.


Scripture:  Psalm 51:7, 10-12
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow… Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.


Next Step:  Go to your favorite place for renewal and spend time alone with God. Let him fill you with his goodness and overwhelm you with his love. Then, go share that refreshment with someone you know who could use some encouragement.


Day 13: August 16

A Prayer for Businesses

Prayer:  Lord, we pray for business to flourish in our counties. Raise up godly men and women in places of influence that they may lead with grace and truth. We need a healthy free market system where we are encouraged to hire and bless workers. Raise up good, honest businesses and take down evil and ungodly businesses that take advantage of people and hurt them financially. Bless Pensacola and surrounding area with big, successful businesses.


Scripture:  Exodus 35:35
He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers.

Next Step:  Pray for your boss and organization. Thank your supervisor for the good things they do. Tell them you are praying for them, their family and their business influence. Pray also for more business to come into our city with higher paying jobs.


Day 14: August 17

A Prayer for the Body of Christ

Prayer:  God, churches are so divided. Many in our city will not even talk to each other. Please unite us in heart and purpose. We need to be unified against Satan in our city and overcome all evil and claim this land for God. May all people know we are your children by the unity we have among believers.


Scripture:  1 Corinthians 1:10
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

Next Step:  As you drive by all the different churches in our cities, pray that God will guide the leaders there toward unity with all others in Christ Jesus. Encourager those who minister to you to unite with other pastors and church leaders around us.


Day 15: August 18

A Prayer for Our Government

Prayer:  Lord, we pray for all our local, state and national leaders. We pray that they all follow you and your ways. We pray our nation humbles itself before you and seeks to please you in all respects. Move our hearts to serve you alone, God. Raise up godly men and women to uphold your laws and your ways.


Scripture:  1 Timothy 2:1-4
I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.


Next Step:  Get a list of our local, state and national leaders and pray over them calling them by name. This is not about a political party but that all government officials submit to God.


Day 16: August 19

A Prayer for all Media Forms

Prayer:  God, the people in America are so influenced by all forms of media and information. It is so difficult to determine the truth but even more, our country is divided because of our words and disrespect for those who hold differences of opinion. Lord, we seek humility, kindness, truth and respect. Teach us all how to hold important views while at the same time not dishonoring those who disagree.


Scripture: Psalm 52:2-4
You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor.  You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. You love every harmful word, you deceitful tongue!

Next Step:  We are the only ones who can only control our words. Ask someone who knows you well and ask them if your words are ever harmful. Pray that God will put a “hedge of protection” around your words so that you do not wound those around you.


Day 17: August 20

A Prayer for Arts and Entertainment

Prayer:  God, we are hard-wired to be influenced by what we see, hear and feel. Yet, not all we see and hear is good for our spiritual development. We compromise our standards so easily and let our society determine what is appropriate for us. Lord, lead us to pursue what is holy and pure. Lead us completely away from all those entertaining words, shows and music that dishonor you. May we embrace the fact that we are the light of the world. Increase our influence.


Scripture: Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.


Next Step:  What are your favorite shows? Evaluate them for their level of purity. Consider making some changes so that your entertainment choices reflect your godly principles.


Day 18: August 21

A Prayer for Mission Fields

Prayer:  God, help us to want what you want – the joy and gladness of all the nations as they hear your story of redemption. Open doors and empower us to go to new fields and people groups with the gospel. And help us to live missionally in our everyday lives, representing you in our neighborhoods and workplaces. Help us bring the nations into the white-hot enjoyment of your glory!


Scripture:  Matthew 28:19-20
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.


Next Step:  Pray to the “Lord of the harvest” to send forth workers. Pray that God grows our missions outreach and increases our influence among those who need him most.


Day 19: August 22

A Prayer for National Revival

Prayer: Lord, we pray for revival in our lives and in our nation. We want this prayer to be strong, prevailing, God-moving, hell-defeating, devil-routing, sinner-saving, believer-sanctifying, Christ-exalting and worker-producing. We desire a move of the Holy Spirit to breathe fresh wind on our nation that your glory will be declared throughout the world.


Scripture: Psalm 80:18-19, Psalm 85:6
Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name. Restore us, O Lord God Almighty; make your face to shine upon us, that we may be saved  Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?


Next Step:  When is the last time you prayed for revival? Pray for a revival of your heart, your home, your church, your community, your state and your nation.


Day 20: August 23

A Prayer for the Vision of More

Prayer:  God, break our hearts under the burden of our broken cities and give us the vision and energy to keep on growing churches that influence their communities with the light and love of the gospel. Increase our desire to see massive movements of people, drawing other people along in following Jesus! Forgive us of small or self-centered thinking. Help us to think bigger and pray Kingdom-oriented prayers.


Scripture: 1 Chronicles 29:11-12
Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O LORD, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone.


Next Step:  Raise the urgency of growing the kingdom of God in your heart. Share the good news of Jesus with someone today. Write down the names of five people you want to see become a Christian and pray for them every day.


Day 21: August 24

A Prayer of Thanksgiving

Prayer:  God, thank you for the last twenty-one days of prayer. We praise you for acting on our prayers and growing your kingdom in our hearts.  All glory belongs to you! Lord, may this not end today. Keep us on our knees before your throne. With grateful hearts we offer all these prayers to you and with eager expectation we await the demonstration of your glory.


Scripture: Ephesians 1:16-17
I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.


Next Step:  Tell God “thank you” over and over. Praise his name and declare his goodness. Lift up Jesus and worship whole-heartedly today. Thank you for joining us these last twenty-one days.
